Total Media Fast: Day 12, Echoes Drift in From the Outside
Accidental and short intentional incursions into the media feeding frenzy have left me angry, tense, and with a sense of powerlessness. Exposure to Garrison Keillor and Matt Lauer being accused of sexual harassment. Whereas Mr. Keillor had an accident of movement with sufficient malevolent interpretation to be accused, Mr. Lauer actively participated in transactional sexuality with a power differential--leaving a sense of loss and disempowerment. Perhaps a vacuum too easily filled with resentment.
With the disempowering contexts that I have experienced, the devaluation of consent and agency in relationships is what I find to be most egregious. However, to foster resentment toward others that took advantage of that devaluation is counter-productive. Moving forward is the only way.
Honor my own agency and consent. And through this, be able to effectively honor the agency and consent of others. This is key here. Those others who do not know how to honor their own consent and agency are destined to defile the consent and agency of others.
